The clan has changed

I was reading back over the blog and realized that our Scottie clan has changed so much since I posted last. We had just lost our Sam E. In October of that year we adopted a frightened little guy aptly named Scotty. He was terrified of people and would hide behind the toilet. He is now very well adjusted and has made himself at home.

Miss Katie came to us through Memory of Monroe on October 28, 2007. We were at a Wiscots convention and heard Jan Seeger talking about an elder girl needing a home. She was an 11 year old silver brindle and had been with the same family since she was 9½ weeks old. Her crime? She started peeing on the floor! She was always an only dog even here in a house full of dogs. She kept to herself and didn't bother with the others at all. After several regimes of antibiotics she stopped peeing in the house. She lost a toe to cancer the first year here. We had to let her go on December 2, 2009. She had cancer of the jaw and sinus cavity.

Shortly after Miss Katie went to the bridge one of the rescues sent me a photo of two elderly siblings sleeping on a bed together wearing coats I had donated. I said if the adoption they had set up fell through then we would take them. And take them we did. Miss Allie & Mighty Max came to us through Memory of Monroe on January 16, 2010 at 14 years of age. She and her brother had been living in a barn, no vet care, no contact, BUT.... said the woman who turned them over to the animal shelter ....I fed them... as if that is enough! The shelter didn't think rescue would take them as they were in such deplorable condition. They shaved them down and bathed them to rid them of the dirt and fleas. Rescue took them the next day and wasn't sure they would even make it. Horrible urine burns, no fur (three hairs between the two of them was how they were described.), tumors and abscesses, rotted teeth and deplorable skin conditions. They fell right into the way of life here with good meals and lots of scritches and treats.

Bert... I got wings for Christmas! Bert was our first, our bouncy Bert, our little black sheep. He had curly fur when it grew out. We adopted Bert from the Eastshore Humane Society while we were still in Connecticut. They held him for a week for us until we could get out here to pick him up. He was turned in because he had bitten a one year old. They should never have left a one year old on the floor with him and he had to have been hurt to have bitten. He was scared to death to even take a treat from your fingers for the longest time. He had a pin in his hip from being hit by a car. And was terrified if you raised a hand or threw a toy in his direction. Someone had not treated him very nicely. We loved our silly boy and had to make the tough decision on Christmas day 2010 to help him cross the bridge. We knew it was time when the other dogs all lay down beside him, cuddling him as if to keep him warm. They had never done that before. He had a rapidly growing tumor that was closing off his airway and he could no longer swallow.

So we then had this young kid (Scotty) and the two old ones and felt we needed a companion for Scotty to play with. So in January when I saw a picture of this gorgeous young lady with the sparkle eyes I worked with STLSTR to bring Miss SuzieQ to join the clan. Gorgeous sweet girl who loves belly rubs and sleeps on her back like a "hussie"

In April we were to assist on a transport for Memory of Monroe. Randy picked up Harry a young rambunctious little boy on Saturday while I was at work and was to meet Jan the next day to pass him off. You guessed it. By the time I got home from work Randy was smitten and I contacted Jan and asked if he could join the clan. It's hard to get a photo of him because he is constantly in motion.

Miss Allie who had been the weaker of the two elderly siblings started to decline and left us the day after Harry joined the clan. She had bladder cancer. We were concerned that Mighty Max might miss her but he is still a happy old man liven in the lap of luxury.

So I think that brings you up to date. We have Mighty Max, Scotty, Prince Harry and Miss SuzieQ and they keep us on our toes here at Scottie Acres.

I'm back....for awhile at least

I dropped off the face of blog land because I got this incredible job that I loved. Sadly it left little time for much else in my life. At the moment I will have lots of time. My health has taken a huge hit this summer. Have been hospitalized 5 times, had three heart caths, two stents and came home today from open heart surgery. Guess God is trying to tell me something! He has been there with me through this whole ordeal and I am glad to have Him on my side. As I was ~~skimming~~ plowing through the thousands of emails and blog posts there was one from Shawnee announcing a table runner swap! I loved the apron swaps and quilt block swaps but haven't had time to join in for quite some time. So I am resurrecting my blog (even if only while I recuperate) and joining in the swap. I'm not allowed to lift more than 5 pounds.....a table runner can't be that heavy! I get to play with my Accuquilt GO! which I absolutely love!

My blocks are done and in the mail. Bad photos I know. Just don't have the sun out to get better ones. Colors are pretty washed out. They really are much more vibrant. Jane gets to pick one for herself for holding the swap. That's why there are 13 instead of 12.

Our Elder Statesman. The third one of the clan to leave us this year. He was my heart dog. He has gone to see his first father who is waiting for him I am sure. Sam E like all our clan was a rescue. His "father" had passed away and the woman of the house did not want Sam E. He must have been very loved by his father as he grieved terribly. He grieved and was scared and he started biting. He was kept in a kennel for 4 months. He probably wondered what was happening and where was his Dad. The noise scared him....so he bit. Until ... we found him and took him home to join the clan. He loved to go for walks! He wanted to be near you and to have his ears scritched. He did not like to be held but loved to snuggle with me on the chair. He was not vicious at all. In fact...he was a big baby. If he got frightened or the other dogs seemed to boisterous he would run and hide behind my legs and cry. He was really a gentle soul. Up until last year he would always stand up and dance for his treats. He loved turkey and popcorn! He was prone to ear infections for the first couple years and would tilt his head down for you to put the meds in them. It's like he knew you were helping to make it better. Sam E had a love for some cheap little fuzzy bones we had gotten. He would gather them like they were his babies and lick then as if to clean them. When all the dogs got new ones he would watch patiently until one was abandoned and would quickly run and retrieve it until he had them all. What a good daddy he would have been.

We almost lost Sam E a year ago. He had become very ill and would not eat. He was so weak that I made an appointment to help him to the bridge. I sat with him and told him if he wanted to go then it was okay but if he didn't then he would have to let me know. That night he ate a half a teaspoon of baby food. And then another and another. Needless to say we canceled the appointment. He needed the meds to help his heart and he was doing well until recently. He could no longer make it up the stairs, he was loosing weight and he had a mass that grew rapidly in his stomach. We kept him comfortable and he got all his favorite treats. I'm thankful for that extra year we had with him. This time he told me it was time to go. This morning he earned his wings.

Craft Hope Blankets

Craft Hope is a faith-based, love inspired project designed to share handmade crafts with those less fortunate. It is our hope to combine our love for crafting and desire to help others into a project to make a difference around the world.

This time we have partnered with the Miracle Foundation to send handmade blankets, beanies and booties to the Bhawani, Rourkela and Sooch Village children's homes in India.

I have not had time to really sit and enjoy the flowers this year as I have been so busy with work. Needless to say that means fewer blog posts and fewer photos of the flowers. So here are some that I took this morning.

My hollyhocks have started blooming. Red ones and pink ones.

This is a tiny little foxglove plant. The color is suppose to be strawberry. Hopefully next year it will get bigger! And lastly this birdhouse has been a source of entertainment as first Momma & Daddy bird built a nest. Later Momma laid her eggs and then the feedings would go on all day long it seemed. The little ones have just recently learned to use their wings and would first fly out and cling onto the lily stems. It was funny and endearing.

Hubby starts a new job tomorrow morning. Jobs are scarce so he has taken one that will keep him away from home for most of the week. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers that he stays safe on his travels and enjoys the work. The fur kids and I will miss him.

After a long day at work yesterday I picked up the mail on my way in. Even in the dark (hey....it's going on 10 o'clock at night) I could see there was a squishy package! When I got into the house I saw there were not one....but two!

first a FQ from one of my partners in the Two Hippos FQ swap. This goes in my neutrals pile ...or maybe B&W ... or maybe I can use it for a witches hat in my Halloween blocks!

Next was a package from Jane's Fabrics. I had purchased some apron fabric as it was different than the one I have. You can see what the other one that I have looks like here. I think a mouse pad and coasters made with this new one is on the list of things to do now too!

On my way to work yesterday I stopped at the Hobby Lobby store as a friend in Texas said they had Scottie apron panels in the fabric department. Sure nuff! Both kids and adults!

Scottie obsessed person that I am I bought three of each! One thing....watch the person cutting fabric when you ask for panels. This person when I said three .... measured three yards and was going to cut right through the middle of a panel!!! She informed me in a very condescending tone that they sell it by the yard and you would have to pay for it if she cut it in the middle of a panel. Totally a waste! Told her to cut me three PANELS whatever the yardage turned out to be and I wrote an email to Hobby Lobby this morning.

I did add to my stash while there too. Some bright button fabric. Just because it was there!

One of my favorite flowers is the lily. I love both the Orientals and the day lilies. These flowers are just outside our picture window. There are several birdhouses and we keep bird feeders full despite the squirrels raiding them.

You can see a little of one of the lavender plants at the bottom of this last photo.

More Fabric!!!

I have to admit that I am a fabricaholic and if there comes a reason, any reason for me to buy fabric then it comes home with me. I joined in on Jane's Halloween block swap. Now I needed some fabric to do my blocks with ... right? ... Of course I did! Two of these (or maybe three) (update ... just checked .... Jane's rules say TWO colors for the ninepatch blocks) will make up my nine patch block...hmmmm wonder if we can do the center block a different color....gotta check the rules. Any how....the rest of the colors/prints will be used in my theme blocks. The colors are much more vibrant than what the photos show.

And then I bought these just because I liked them. I love batiks....the pencils will make cute mouse pads and coasters. The fall leaves are to die for! They are just so pretty. Most of the bolt sold today. Hey...this stuff just came in! And those little dachshunds are so cute. The orange was an end of bolt and just jumped into my pile. I think I did my share to stimulate the economy today.

I love getting things in the mail...especially packages! Don't we all! And lookie what I got today!

In a "love for fabric swap" I got this green Scottie fabric with a card of buttons and this extra wide black ric rac. One of my favorite notions as of late are these wide ric racs!

Also I received two different apron swaps! First was from a zoo apron swap. The lady who made this has held onto this vintage fabric for 20 years! Isn't it just gorgeously cute? I love it!

And lastly this apron from a red white and blue apron swap. Along with the apron came a cute flag cup cozy that I forgot to take a photo of.

Working long (and sometimes weird hours) makes it kind of tough to get any sewing done. I like to join in on apron swaps and work on quilts Yesterday I had a whole day to sew! Yeah!!!! I was able to get two aprons finished for a couple swaps I joined. The pattern is called Lilly by Busy Bee Quilt Designs.

I did the jungle apron swap.

And the wacky fabric apron swap....Think this is wacky enough?

I finished sewing my strips together for the Quilt a long that Old Red Barn is having. I even cut a few blocks when I was done.

And I made progress on my "What Did the Cat Eat?" applique quilt/wall hanging. Need to work on the faces next time I have a day off. Each cat has something different in it's belly.

Now I need to go to bed as I work day shift tomorrow and then go directly to my bible study group.

Lots of stuff arriving in the mail box lately!

This is a garden apron I received in the Busy Bee Apron Swap from Suzi. I wasn't sure who Suzi was until just the day before yesterday as there was no email address to thank her. She commented on my blog!

Poor neglected blog! Slowly I am getting back into a groove and attempting to have some time to do the things I want to do. One of those is sharing some of the things I have been doing. I have been joining in on some fabulous apron swaps. I have not been taking photos...camera issues. Here are a couple that I did send out. This was for the Fiesta Apron Swap. Nice bright colors.

Then this one went to Italy for the vintage apron swap. The fabric is from 1969 and is the same as what I used for curtains in my first apartment! The kitchen had tangerine walls on top and white beadboard on the bottom.

I also did a siggie block (well a bunch of them for a swap) Another first for me. Not bad for a first try! I hear our packages of blocks are in the mail so will be able to show them all soon!

Finally for this post. I am not sure if I will have the time to follow through all the way on time with this one but here are the strips for the quilt along that Old Red Barn is having

I have been under the weather for the second time this winter with a miserable cold/flu bad enough to take time off of work. This sucks because I also don't feel like doing anything around the house....even sewing!

I did manage to get my "Tea for Two" Apron swap package shipped out. Here is a sneak peak Kebi....

And also my red fruit fabric swap package left here for the Netherlands.

And this is a fun shot. We had been cleaning carpets and floors and Randy was making popcorn. Bert LOVES popcorn. See him watching it pop!

This, that and the other....

Quite a few things crossed off my to do list today. Also received some new fabrics for my stash in the mail. Don't they look yummy??? Wonder if the recipes work?

I was able to complete two out of three of my swap aprons. And the third may be completed before the day ends. Now I just need to get the goodies packed to ship.

For the Tea for Two apron swap I had originally planned on using this fabric but changed my mind as my partner likes green and yellow. If you thought I would show you what it looks like you'll have to wait because my swap partner reads my blog sometimes.

For the Fiesta Apron Swap I had a really hard time. My swap partner does not like orange. All the fiesta fabrics I found had a large amount of orange in them. This was my first choice.

See what I mean? I went another whole direction with it and hope she likes it anyway. It is bright and cheery with much less orange.

The last one to make is the vintage apron swap. I have the fabric and like I said....maybe I will get it cut out tonight. While going through my vintage linens I found a bunch of heavy napkins with a button hole in one corner. Were these made to button on to shirt buttons? Does anyone know?

Now on to sewing quilt squares together.

Getting laundry done...sorting through some fabric but nothing on my list of to do's.

2 aprons to make for swaps (I have the fabric picked out!)

vintage Scottie quilt repair/remake (an on going tedious job)

find blue fabric like the black in the background to this top (I got it in black, blue, red and purple). Want to use it for the cottage quilt sashing. I just bought it this past week! How could I have lost it already?

Cut more squares for the 9-patch (and sew them together)

Going with the hubby to his doctor's appointment this afternoon and shopping for some groceries afterwards.

Tomorrow is the dentist for me to have a cap put on my front tooth and restore the two next to it that got broken. I HATE dentists but am looking forward to getting my smile back.

Spring...It will come

I enjoy the beauty of the fresh fallen snow outside my window....don't get me wrong. There is beauty in winter. But....Spring is a new awakening to the senses! The air after the spring rains has a different smell than the icy winds of winter. The warmth of the spring sun seems much gentler than the glare of the winter sun. Nature transforms so quickly in spring. New buds .... I can watch them grow outside my window to transform bare branches on the trees within a days time to a lush green canopy providing shade. The sounds of spring are different as the birds become more active and species that migrate return to our little haven. I love being awakened by their songs!

The colors of spring after a white winter....Ahhh! It's like an explosion of paints upon a canvas! Fireworks exploding from the ground! There is no green more beautiful than the greens of spring. And when the flowers start to bloom I could sit and look at them for hours.

Yes....spring will come and bring us a new beginning....a new passion for life...another beautiful painting that will last for only a little while as the cycle of life brings us into summer once again.

I added lots of stuff to my stash this week!

Fat Quarters! Loved the colors. I have more of the one with the spools on it but just "needed" to get that one too!

These are all .5 yard pieces or end of bolt scraps that I picked up at work. Again...I just wanted to add the colors (and those flowers!) to my stash.

Then I got a couple yards of each of the novelty prints. Not sure what I'll do with them yet but couldn't resist the bright colors! Maybe an aquarium baby quilt with this one???

I added another piece of washable brocade for the brocade and suiting quilt I have planned. Isn't it pretty???

And this arrived in the mail yesterday. It was an eBay purchase. Cherry red baby wale corduroy with embroidered black Scotties!

Fat quarters are arriving!

I signed up for the fat quarter swap over at Sew Momma, Sew! I actually signed up for two sets, one being International. Love seeing what fabrics show up from over the pond. Anyway...my first three have arrived from some of those stateside. Here they are!

I haven't decided what I will do with all of them when they get here. Maybe see if they can all be worked into a quilt? Love all of these! Thanks so much ladies!

A find and my wonky stars

Years and years ago when I bought my Singer and the kids were all little I would sew their clothes. I'd do assembly line sewing for the four girls using the same pattern and just lengthen it! I made a couple quilts using cardboard templates from some magazine. My son had a turtle one he lost when our place burned down. I found this quilt top tucked away that I made at the same time. The triangles are all scraps from outfits I made for the girls and the red is flannel. If I recall I think it was called a Friendship pattern.

Maybe now that all those kids are grown and have kids of their own I will get it finished.

I finished 3 wonky stars and will ship them off to Tia tomorrow. They were fun to make and I learned from a few mistakes I made as I was doing them. Hope the fires get under control soon. That is a little Scottie angel hanging from the light fixture at the top of the photo!

What made me open a shop on Etsy?

Interesting question for some....easy to answer for some but not for others. I guess many of us have sold on Ebay at one time or another. Some with good results and some not. It's a great venue for some things and not for others. It was also getting expensive. I make things because I like to and I like to share what I make with others. Most of the items I make I give away but it can be an expensive hobby so why not sell some of the things I make? Will I ever get rich? Probably not. I can and do reach a wider audience to sell my items to. I do one "show" a year and that is for about 30 people. Of course they are all Scottie people so they are the perfect target shoppers! Etsy was another venue to showcase my items. I just haven't had time to add anything to the shop of late.

My other reasons for selling on Etsy are my babies Miss Sassy & Mr. Murphy who left us this this year due to cancers.

And the three still with us.... Miss Katie, Sam E and Bert.

and all the Scotties out there waiting for a loving home.

I'm not a quilter and when I do make "quilts" I don't worry whether the seams are a quarter inch (I do what is easiest for me!) and if things don't match up it isn't a BIG deal. That does keep me from helping out sometimes and I did want to send some blocks to Tia at Camp Follower Bags and Quilts to help with the quilts for the bush fire victims in Australia. Soooo.... this morning I cut the 4.5" blocks and had a go at it to see if I could get the requisite 12.5" block to come out. This one was done with black background and yellows as that is what I was working with. It worked! So later today when I get back I can start with some to send! Oh...you wanted to see my test block????

Yes...it has Scotties in it and yes I know one of the points was sewn in with the wrong side showing but it measures out to 12.5"! Not bad for a first try!

I also sewed together this batch of nine patch blocks. I like nine patch. The small squares are 2".

I was cruising around Etsy the other day looking at vintage fabrics. I found the exact fabric that I had used to make curtains for the kitchen of the very first apartment my husband and I shared when we got married in 1969! I remember it clearly. We painted the wainscoting white along with the trim and painted the walls a tangerine orange! The colors are much more vibrant than this picture. Think fluorescent ... almost. Lime green and candy pink with bright yellow and orange!

The fabric is still in beautiful condition and there is about 2 yards! I got it from YesterDaze Vintage Clothing & Collectibles

Sugar, Spice, and Everything Nice Apron Swap

My package went out albeit a day late. I have just been so sick this past month it has been an effort to just get up out of bed. I hope my partner likes her package. I got the sweetheart pattern from Lucy at Sexy Apron Day. I had something totally different planned and changed my mind when I saw this. I made it out of a reproduction of the old flour sacks with Scotties on it. My photography sucks lately as you can see. I did not put any ric rac on it. It really looks better in person that the photo does. Hope my partner likes it. I also included a hearts and flowers mousepad that can be used as a hot pad with matching coasters, a bar of all natural cranberry soap and this vintage apron.

I also received my package from my swap partner. Thank you Jen of http://lifeontheroof.blogspot.com! I got this adorable pink and green apron from her! This is her photo of it! She does excellent work. I have the pattern but the thoughts of getting all that bias binding to go on straight scares the bejeezus outta me! It was in a cute white organza bag covered with pink and red hearts as was some dark chocolate pieces. There was also another package of chocolate included. I am sharing the chocolates with hubby. They taste very good with coffee this morning! Thank You Jen!

Tribute to our Mr. Murphy

We have a photo of the Murphster as a pup only because he at one time belonged to my late father-in-law. When he died suddenly in an auto crash in December of 2003 we brought Murphy up to live with us. He adapted quickly to the temperature changes (he lived in Mississippi and we brought him into the cold of Wisconsin!) and from being an only dog with a fairly sedate lifestyle to a family with three other rescues and lots of room to run. And run he did. He always had a smile on his face and his big long tail was always wagging! He would run from the front window through the living room and dining room and out the doggie door, across the deck and down into the pen and then back. The deer herds came down through every night and he would bark and bark and run the fence line. When they finally wandered away he would come in tail wagging as if to say... I chased them off again!

Murphy had lovely red highlights! He also hated having his picture taken. He could hear the digital camera opening from three rooms away and would run for cover or outside. He loved his walks and wanted to tear up the lab mix who lived on the nearby farm. That's because Bear roamed and entered the Murphster's territory often! Mr. Murphy cleaned up nice when he was groomed. He love to sit in the recliner with me. Would walk up, look me in the face as if to communicate something to me and then curl up in my lap. I miss my big boy. Cancer takes too many too soon. I never thought of him not being here. He was way to young and the house is weirdly quiet without him even though we still have three other Scotties here.

Every few months I have been joining in on an apron swap. It is fun and I get to make (and receive!) some neat aprons. It also has me checking out shops that have aprons on Etsy. One of those is Sassy Aprons. She has donated an apron as a giveaway on the latest swap I signed up for. (Lucy and Shawnee's Sassy and Flirty apron swap) Ain't it sweet???

Project Improv

One is creating squares for charity quilts and the other is to make something...anything...quilt, wall hanging, table runner....using no pattern and doing something you haven't done before. A Challenge to start the New Year

Many of us struggle with day to day things. Money is tight all over. We struggle with health issues. Not enough time to do the things we want. Mostly they are things we can change or at least deal with. When we look at the overall picture ... Life really is good to us. God is good to us. Maybe we can give a little to make a child smile!

I am CHALLENGING all of those who come across this blog post to help out in a very small way. I grew up in Connecticut. Spent most of my life there. In Connecticut Paul Newman started a camp for children with terminal illnesses or cancer. It's called the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp. Here the kids can experience a few days or weeks of being a kid just like any other kid with others who understand why they don't have any hair or are puffy from steroids or don't have a lot of energy. But they are still kids.

The Farmington Valley Quilt Guild (I hope that's the one Jackie but correct me if I'm wrong) has decided to donate 300 pillowcases for the children. They are a small guild and Jackie is offering up a CHALLENGE to all her readers to make just one pillowcase. She will send you a simple 20 minute pillowcase pattern. (Or I can send you the pattern.) I am Challenging YOU! It takes very little fabric. You might find it so simple that you make a few of them! Such a small gift that makes you feel good as well as bringing a smile to a child's face.

Regardless of whether or not you make/sell products for Children under 12, this new law will effect you, and effect all children.

The CPSIA of 2008 will effect everyone who makes items for children under the age of 12, and everyone who buys products for children under the age of 12. In order to be in compliance with the new law, third-party testing and certification would be required for all products for children under 12, stating these items are lead-free and phthalates-free. Testing that is so expensive it is prohibitive to most of us. EVERY ITEM needs to have certification with it for all components including threads, zippers, buttons and fabrics! This would apply to all products inclusive of handmade items, vintage items, and any items made - either for sale or for free - for children (other than your own) under the age of 12.

Go after the foreign made stuff! Not only will this affect the small business person but also organizations that depend on donations of items such as blankets from crafters that make them for the needy. Don't sit idle as it won't go away just by us wishing it so.

My husband's niece and her husband adopted a little Korean boy whom they named Jacob. They recently celebrated his 1st birthday and had him baptized. I wanted to get this quilt finished and sent to him for that special day but alas....time was not on my side. It is going in the mail today.

These are some of the pieces as I started the appliqués. I wanted it to have lots of textures so used minky fabrics along with cottons.

Here is the finished quilt top. I used purple and yellow and green and red and blue. All the appliqués were done with Scottie fabrics! All the same design but in yellow, red or green.

Here is his name!

The back is a nice soft green minky fabric. I hope he enjoys it!

Scottie fabric finds

I finished the three Christmas stockings and they are in this pile of packages going out today along with a couple Bling Scottie sweat shirts and some funky Scottie coasters making their way to the UK!

I have started doing the appliqués for Jacob's quilt. I want it to be touchy feely as little ones should have lots of textures to touch and the colors should carry him through a few years.

So I did make progress. It's off to the post office and to VOTE! Then I work the afternoon until closing.

The story of Ralph

My maternal grandparents have been deceased for many years. My grandfather Ralph Morin died when I was about 10 I think. I really am not sure anymore exactly when. My Grandmother Loretta (Young) Morin passed away in April of 1968 while I was away in Australia attending school. By today's standard's they both died young in their early 50's. You ask what this has to do with Ralph? Well at some time during their life together Grampa Ralph gave Grammy Morin a mink stole. Through the years my Mom had it. I don't think she ever wore it but she kept it. Last November my Mom passed away and my sisters asked if I wanted the stole. I of course said yes. Not because I would wear it although it was lovely. I never had anything that belonged to my Grandmother after she passed away. Anyway... Ralph was made from that mink stole. I waited to name him until I saw how he looked. He definitely looked male to me...otherwise he would have been Loretta! Here is a photo of my grandparents. I'm hoping one of my sisters can find a photo of my grandmother in her mink stole.

I have been missing in action and hope to be able to remedy that. I got a promotion at work which took me away from things and I think even though the hours are long that I might be able to get back on track now. I signed up for the HOT MAMA apron swap and this is what my swap partner will be getting in the mail. The whole swap was based hot drinks. Tea, coffee, hot chocolate. You get the picture.

What little I got about my partner told me she liked red but her least favorite color was grey. She loves flavored hot chocolate! I included a set of coasters I made to match the apron and an assortment of hot chocolate mixes. These apron swaps are so much fun!

Almost forgot that today was Monday!

Sometimes memories are not always sweet or happy. Sometimes they are about hurt or misunderstandings.

First grade....I walked to school and home by myself. Even crossed streets without crossing guards in those days! It was spring and the lilacs were blooming. There was a house I passed that had the biggest most beautiful lilac bush I have ever encountered. Each day I would stop and smell them. To a little girl they were just heavenly. One day the lady who lived there asked if I would like some to take home to my mother. I was thrilled and excited. She cut me a bouquet that was almost as big as I was. I thanked her (that's what I had been taught to do) and skipped on home with a smile on my face. I had a huge bouquet to give to my Mother. Beautiful flowers just for her. It was special. Her response was not what my little heart had expected.

She yelled at me for stealing flowers from someone's yard! Called me a little thief! She wouldn't even listen when I tried to explain that the nice lady gave them to me to give to her! My heart that was so full of happiness broke with hurt that my gift to her had caused unhappiness instead of the smile that I had hoped for. I don't remember what happened. I think she went to the ladies house but to me it did not matter. I never brought her flowers again even though I loved her. Not even when she died.

Needle Types

THERE'S A LARGE VARIETY OF NEEDLES AVAILABLE TODAY but the general rules for usage still hold true. Use sharp points for woven fabrics, ball-point needles for knits and universal points for both wovens and knits. Needle sizes are usually marked with European and American numbers, with the European number first. Needle sizes range from 60/8 (finest) to 120/19 (thickest).
Ball-point/stretch needles have a slightly rounded tip that goes between the threads of a knit fabric--available in sizes 70/10 through 100/16.
Sharp (Microtex) needles have a sharp point to pierce the threads of woven fabric--good for heirloom sewing and quilt piecing. Available in sizes 60/8 through 90/14.
Universal needle points are slightly rounded for use with knit fabrics, yet sharp enough for wovens--available in sizes 60/8 through 120/19.
Denim/jeans needles have an extra-sharp point and stiff shank for stitching denim, heavy faux leather and other densely woven fabrics. Available in sizes 70/10 through 110/18.
Leather needles have a wedge-shaped point to penetrate leather, suede, heavy faux leather and nonwoven fabrics--available in sizes 80/12 through 110/18.
Machine-embroidery needles are designed to prevent thread shredding and breakage when sewing dense designs with rayon, metallic and other embroidery threads. Available in sizes 75/11 through 90/14.
Metallic needles feature a longer eye, fine shaft and sharp point to eliminate thread breakage, shredding and skipped stitches. They also work well with monofilament threads. Also known as Metallica, Metafil and Metallic Machine Embroidery--available in sizes 70/10 through 90/14.
Quilting needles have a sharp tapered point to sew through thick layers and across seams--available in sizes 75/11 through 90/14.
Topstitch needles have an extra-sharp point, larger eye and groove to accommodate topstitching thread. Available in sizes 80/12 through 100/16.

Special-purpose needles
These needles are used only with front-to-back threading machines with zigzag features. Make sure your throat-plate needle hole is wide enough to accommodate needle's width, and zigzag width function is set at zero to prevent sideways movement.

Hemstitch (wing) needle
Uses: Hemstitching or heirloom embroidery on linen and batiste.
Configuration: Has fins on sides of shank to create holes as you sew.
Troubleshooting: Stitch is more effective when needle returns to same needle hole more than once. If needle pushes fabric into needle hole, put stabilizer under fabric.

Twin (double) needle
Uses: Topstitching, pin tucking, and decorative stitching.
Configuration: Two needles on single shaft produce two rows of stitches. Measurement between needles ranges from 1.6mm to 6mm, and needles come with universal, stretch, embroidery, denim, and Metallica points.
Troubleshooting: Be sure throat plate allows for distance between needles.

Triple needle
Uses: Same uses as for double needle.
Configuration: Cross bar on single shaft connects three needles to sew three stitching rows. Comes with universal point in 2.5mm and 3mm widths.
Troubleshooting: Same as for double needle.

Spring needle
Uses: Free-motion stitching with dropped feed dogs.
Configuration: Has wire spring above point to prevent fabrics from riding up onto needle, eliminating need for presser foot.
Troubleshooting: Before using, practice free-motion stitching with heavy regular needle, paper, and dropped feed dogs. Don't pull paper/fabric; instead gently guide it through stitching. Wear safety glasses for free-motion work, since needles often break.

Understanding the sewing machine needle

Understanding the basic needle parts helps to better understand the needle's functions.

The needle shank is the area inserted in the machine and held in place by a screw or clamp. Most household sewing machine needles have a flat shank side. This should be positioned opposite the threading path. On most of the newer machines the flat side goes to the back.

The groove is an indentation down the front of the needle shaft which leads the thread from the last machine thread guide to the needle eye.

The needle shaft is the long portion that penetrates the fabric with each stitch.

The eye is the receptacle for the thread and should allow it to pass through smoothly and freely for proper stitch formation.

The point is the sharp or rounded end penetrating the fabric.

The scarf is an indentation at the back of the needle above the eye. A long scarf helps eliminate skipped stitches by allowing the bobbin hook to pick up the upper thread more easily.

Needles....which one to use?

Working in a fabric shop I often get asked which needle to use in people's machines....that ....and which thread but that is a whole story! Many have never changed the needle in their machines and had no clue there were different types or sizes!

Most sewing machine needles will fit on almost all your standard sewing machines. I say most as some of the old machines need special needles and I'm sure someone out there has a machine that just doesn't fit in here. Most packages have both metric and American sizing on them and may appear as 80/12 or 110/18. The smaller number is the American sizing system and the other is the metric number related to the size of the shaft. The larger the number, the bigger the shaft diameter. You should use the proper size needle for the fabric you are sewing on and the weight of the the thread you are using.

Many packages sold will tell you what type of fabric they are made to sew on. Sewing experts differ on actually how often a needle should be changed. Many people don't change theirs unless it breaks! Recommendations range from every 8-10 hours of sewing time to changing with each new project. However often you decide if you experience any stitching problems, always check your needle. A dull or burred needle can cause fabric snags or puckers.

This time it's not about the little black furry ones that run our household. The husband of one of my bible study members collects albums. He gifted me with this album. I've never heard of the group before and nothing turned up on a quick (and I mean real quick) Google search. I don't have a turntable any more so would be interested in finding something on Youtube maybe. The back reads..."THE SCOTTIES" immediately conjures visions of kilts, haggis, and bagpipes: but you would be only half right, for you are listening to a mother, father, and son team - a truly memorable, multi-talented and highly entertaining trio!

Their showbusiness background spans three generations, originating in Scotland and now carrying on a tradition in America. Nick Senior was born and reared in Scotland of Italian born parents. Heather is all Scottish _ with a little bit o' Irish wa-ay back -- which makes their son, Nick, an interesting combination!

When they perform, something happens every minute. A typical show involves organ, accordian, guitars, banjos, clarinet, saxophone, flute, trombone, violins, comedy and way-out impressions. There are also selections in Italian, French, Jewish and Spanish.

Another Monday Memory

Thanksgiving Day...all the trimmings....don't remember the year....just the house. Set down to the table...say grace...and begin to eat. My Mother begins to cry. It is the first Thanksgiving we weren't sharing with relatives. We cover the dishes and pack them in the car and set off for Maine to share Thanksgiving dinner with my grandparents. Miss Katie checks it out. We are attending an NMRA Winnebagoland Division Model Railroad meet this weekend in Iron River MI. I usually take along a model of a train or structure that I have done. This time I have this to enter. I will still need to finish up some quilting on it but it is done far enough where I can take it along. Miss Katie says get that thing off my spot on the couch!

On September 28, 2003 a skinny little ball of fire came into our lives. We made a promise to her that she would be happy here for as long as she lived. She was born on March 3, 1995 and lived her life, until she was rescued, in a cage giving birth to litter after litter of puppies until there was nothing left of the wee girl. She was rescued by some sweet ladies who allowed her to come and join the Williamson Clan. She arrived here via a Waggin' train and everyone who came in contact with her fell in love with her. She had the most soulful eyes. Today I took her to the vet. She just seemed out of sorts the past couple of days. Nothing you could put your finger on but was very uncomfortable this morning and would not eat or drink and could barely walk. X-rays showed she was full of cancer. It was over taking every organ. She looked at me and a tear fell from her eye. My little girl who had been so lively was ready to go and left peacefully while I held her. The others have said their goodbyes and she will be buried in the garden outside the window. Run through the meadows sweet girl. You were loved by many.

Monday Memories - just an early one

My Internet friend Myfanwy said she was going to do some Monday Memory posts. I thought that was a great idea. Lots of BIG gaps in my past but it would be nice to remember tidbits each Monday so I'm going to try and join her in this journey.

One room log cabin...huge black wood stove.....icebox that we went to town to get big blocks of ice to keep things cold. Cast iron sink with a tub for washing. Learnin' to prime the pump at the well. Kettle always settin' on the back of the stove with hot water for whatever was needed. Kerosene lamps to read by at night. Old pendulum clock that ran on an 8 day cycle I think. Grampa's carvings hanging off the rafters. Mattresses piled on the bed in the corner.

A little girl who would share huge blueberries on rice krispies in her Hoppa-long Cassidy dishes in the morning while Grampa had his eggs and toast. Fresh tomatoes and leaf lettuce with sugar at lunch. Cold watermelon brought up from the well. Sweet peas and gladiolas growin' in the garden. Traps set out to catch the wood chuck's that ate the plants. Life of an innocent.

Adult Bibs have been a popular item in my Etsy shop as well as the everyday world. They aren't just plain and boring ones either! As I do custom orders I have been requested to make ones with beige floral prints for a woman recovering from a stroke to blue for a guy and floral for his girl friend to use as "burrito protection". I have made them for business men to keep their ties clean and the one pictured above was a gift for our friend's birthday. Albert is a long time railroad fan and was a modeler until his eyesight got so bad he couldn't see anymore. I made him this reversible train bib. Now I need to make one to fit this little guy so he and his "Bumpa" can have matching bibs. That is your's truly holding Titus at 3 weeks old.

Beep....beep.....beep

It's a sign of the times. It intrudes into our life and I hate it. The constant beeping at me of every gadget around.

This morning (as with a lot of mornings) I awoke to a shrill and insistent beep...beep....beep....pause....beep....beep....beep. My husband's computer at the other end of the house has a program that alert's you when it overheats. It does it quite frequently at night when his anti virus programs are doing their scans. Of course it doesn't wake him up.....just me. Then I hear another beep....not as insistent and not as shrill and with longer pauses. Where is it coming from and what is it. Ahhhh! Hubby's cell phone....letting us know that his battery is low!

Appliances beep to let us know they are finished with their cycles (the washer, the dryer, the micro-wave and that cute little Spotbot that cleans all the piddle spots the dogs make) The oven beeps at me if I haven't hit start and it beeps when it gets up to temperature and it beeps when the cooking time is over. The answering machine beeps that we have a message and beeps if the power has gone off. Husband's computer beeps if it is time to change the password. The car beeps if the keys are left in or the lights on when you get out or your seatbelt isn't fastened (the van goes ding-ding....how did it get a ding-ding instead of a beep?) Our registers at work beep if you hit the right keys and beep if you hit the wrong ones! The scanners beep to tell you that it didn't scan and beeps if it did!

The power sources on the model railroad layout beep when it starts and has a variety of different beeps that are suppose to tell us different things are wrong.

Whatever happened to waking up to the sound of birds singing? .....and the only beep beep was a car horn?

I like strolling through the Etsy shops to see what others are doing. I have found that I go into shops I never would have even heard of when I just type one word in the search box. Today's word was "coffee" as I was thinking I needed another cup.

I love to cook on the grill....

I love cooking out on the grill any time of the year. Yup....I even do it in the winter during snow storms. Ask my friends! But I love cooking outside more in the summer because of all the fresh veggies I can get. Tonight we had two of my favorites. Zucchini and asparagus. Very simple preparation. Cut the ends off the zucchini and slice them in half. I like the smaller ones. With the asparagus just cut off the ends. Then brush them both with olive oil. Don't be shy....give them a nice liberal coat. Then sprinkle them with wasabi seasoning. You could use something else but this is my favorite. Rub your steak with "Kitchen Bouquet" to help keep the juices in. Then put them all on the grill. The zucchini are done when they are tender. The asparagus turns bright green and the tips get a little crispy. The steak is cooked to whatever doneness you prefer.

Prep time: about 10 minutes Cooking time: about 10 minutes or longer for a thicker steak.

It is actually a little tree frog clinging to the outside of our sliding glass door during a thunderstorm last night. projects....and new fabric

I've been neglecting the blog lately.....life sometimes does get in the way. I'm enjoying my new job....what person who sews wouldn't love working in a fabric shop! I do have some projects in the works. Custom order for place mats. Pink ones are done and the blue ones need topstitching. They will ship on Monday. Order for an apron, place mats and coasters to match. Coasters are done, place mats are cut and pinned and apron is being cut. Should ship on Monday also if all goes well. Need to topstitch a blanket yet that will also ship on Monday.

Now to the fabric piece I picked up yesterday. I can't get a good picture of it but maybe you can get an idea of the texture. It is a blue Persian Lamb velvet. I got this piece that is a little over 2 yards for $4.03!!!! It is sooooo soft. I have watched it hang there at work and finally said....it's going home with me. I'm thinking maybe a vest, maybe a neat bag, maybe a hat and scarf.......
